About BSc in Medical Laboratory Science

The Medical Laboratory Science Program (BSc MLS) at the Medical Technology Department at UCT is designed to prepare competent and qualified Healthcare professionals with a Bachelor of Science degree that meets national and international accreditation requirements.

The Medical Laboratory Sciences Program is a university based in-person program with hands-on experimental laboratory components and practical clinical training and practice. The BSc in Medical Laboratory Sciences from UCT equips students with the knowledge and skills in clinical care. Medical Laboratory Scientists provide essential support to the healthcare system in the diagnosis, prevention and prognosis of medical conditions with reliable results. This program has been tailored to specifically address the increasing needs for competent medical laboratory professionals in various healthcare facilities, research institutions and industrial facilities.

In order to best serve the UCT student, the program is designed to meet the required national and international accreditation Standards. The program is designed to fulfill the accreditation requirements set by the (ASCP) American Society for Clinical Pathology; graduates will be eligible to sit for the (ASCP – BOC) international certification exam (ASCPi) with limiting the need for further equivalency of their degree in the USA.  The program is also designed to meet the accreditation standards of ABET by the graduation of the first cohorts.

In the current University-based program, students accepted into the program’s professional phase will receive intense didactic and laboratory experiences within medical laboratory courses on campus. This will occur in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters of the first two years in the basic sciences phase of the program.

If all the courses are satisfactorily completed during this time and the student demonstrates the skills and aptitudes expected of a student in the medical field, the student will be assigned a clinical experience location and register for clinical courses in the professional clinical phase. This clinical experience is a full-time extended practicum most traditionally done during the day shift hours. Students will be expected to meet the scheduling requirements of the partnering healthcare facility placed in.

The BSc degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of all components of the curriculum. The length of the program is 3 Years for full time students. The three years include a first year of Basic science course, a second year for clinical medical sciences and a third year dedicated for professional courses related to the major with practicums and a final research project.
